I recently returned from a wonderful trip to DC and the Boston area. I brought along my travel journal supplies (watercolors, brush, pens and pencil). I had a very small journal with me (4x5) that I purchased on a trip, I did not know if the paper would hold the watercolor as desired. It was pretty good: the wash behind the boats got a bit fuzzy but otherwise the colors sat on the paper pretty well. It is such a cute size (which is why I left my fingers in some of the photos) I will keep playing in it, but I also found that the single wc sheets were great to work on. I cut them ahead of time to fit in my purse easily and I had those with me everywhere so I could do a quick pencil sketch on location. I took photos with my phone that I could use as reference for the colors when I returned to the hotel. My favorite new tool is the Pigma brush pen; I love the way it forces me to incorporate the darkest values. I will be reviewing this pen in the upcoming Adventure Journal News.

Come join the sketch group on May 25 (Weds) at Iris4U. This is the most beautiful Iris garden in the Denver area. If you go to Iris4U.com you can get directions. (It's off of Federal and Amherst.) We will meet at 1:00 at the front entrance, and will only wait till 1:05 for stragglers before heading into the garden. However, it won't be hard to find us if you come a bit later. There are some chairs and benches in various areas but you may wish to have your own seating . Thanks to Diana Roth for arranging this outing! FYI - there will be a few of us randomly sketching with various materials. This is a free meet up with no instruction, just the camaraderie of other folks who love to make marks. No need to RSVP, everyone is welcome so bring friends if you'd like. Next sketch meet up is June 8; check back on the 5th for location. The weather is calling...and so are my pens and watercolors! I am going to try to make a bi-monthly commitment to sketching outdoors somewhere in the Denver metro area and you are invited to join the fun! I'll be posting the location and times on this blog a few days before the gathering. Starting May 25, we will meet every other Weds. We will plan on approx. 1-3pm until July 20, when we will switch to a 9-11am meeting to capture the cooler air and easier parking. No need to RSVP. just show up with your chair and art stuff. No cost, no instruction, just easy conversation and shared time sketching together. The next date is May 25, 1:00-3:00, check back a few days before to find out where to meet! The best way to gain satisfaction with your sketching is to schedule regular practice times. So mark your calendars and plan on playing! |
